Maximize Your End-of-Year Vision Benefits — Even If You Don’t Wear Glasses

Don’t leave money or eye health on the table.

Optometrist examines a patient's eye using a slit lamp in a clinical setting. Equipment labeled "BM 900." Calm and focused atmosphere.

As we move into the final months of the year, it’s a great time to check in on your unused vision benefits, FSA/HSA balances, and any end-of-year flex dollars tied to your insurance. Whether you wear glasses daily or have never needed corrective lenses, there's real value in using these benefits before they expire.

1. Use It—Don’t Lose It

Many vision plans, Health Savings Accounts (HSA), and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) operate on a “use it or lose it” basis. If you don’t spend those funds before December 31st, you may forfeit them. That’s your money—let’s make sure it goes toward something meaningful for you or your family.

2. Time for a New Look?

If you’re due for a new pair of glasses, now’s the time. Even if your prescription hasn’t changed, it might be worth using your benefits toward:

  • Prescription sunglasses (yes, they’re covered!)

  • Computer/blue-light glasses for work-from-home eyes

  • A second pair with a different style or function

  • Back-up glasses for kids (because, let’s be honest, things happen)

Contacts are another great option—stock up now to start the new year set.

3. No Vision Correction? You Still Need an Exam

This is key. Many people skip their eye exams because they “see fine.” But vision and eye health aren’t the same thing. A comprehensive eye exam can detect serious health issues like:

  • Glaucoma

  • Macular degeneration

  • Diabetic retinopathy

  • Hypertension

  • Neurological conditions

In fact, some of the earliest signs of chronic diseases show up in the eye. Even if you don’t wear glasses or contacts, using your benefits for a comprehensive exam can catch health issues early—before they impact your vision or quality of life.

4. FSA/HSA-Friendly Purchases

Did you know you can also use FSA and HSA funds for:

  • Eye exams

  • Prescription glasses or sunglasses

  • Contact lenses and solution

  • Certain dry eye therapies

  • Specialty lenses (like Ortho-K or scleral lenses)

Just ask us what qualifies—our team is happy to help you maximize what’s covered.

5. Family-Friendly Tip

If your kids haven’t had their annual eye exam, now’s the time. Pediatric eye issues often go undetected, even in school screenings. Clear vision is foundational to learning—don’t wait until there's a problem to schedule that check-up.

Need help navigating your benefits? We’re happy to walk you through what’s available and what makes the most sense for your family. Call, text, or book online—just don’t wait until December 30th.

Let’s finish the year with clarity.
